Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. [By M. W. Shelley.] by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Frankenstein is a novel infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement. In modern popular culture, people have tended to refer to the Creature as "Frankenstein" (especially in films since 1931), despite this being the name of the scientist, and the creature being unnamed in the book itself. The title of the novel refers to the scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who learns how to create life and creates a being in the likeness of man, but larger than average and more powerful. Shelley's name appeared on the revised third edition, published in 1831. ![]() The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818, and this audiobook is read from that text. Shelley wrote the novel when she was 18 years old. ![]() Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797 - 1851)įrankenstein or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by the British author Mary Shelley. Bale has chosen to depict only a few characters in this book, but they are masterfully drawn and succeed in paying homage to classic science fiction like Firefly and Star Wars while retaining a distinctive individuality of their own. Like all good science fiction, the story focuses on the characters. ![]() ![]() In the first book, the author paints an uncomfortable and frequently bleak vision of a future in which humanity has spread beyond the ruins of Earth. This book includes both The Heretic and Defiance. I read all three volumes when they were originally published, but when each piece of the puzzle is read in context the final product is so much more than the sum of its parts. This series is something very special indeed. I think what really attracted me to the genre was the sheer variety and originality of the stories: a kaleidoscope of worlds and characters. I devoured the works of Isaac Asimov, Aldous Huxley, Douglas Adams, and many other writers.
